The amount of inflammatory ingredients in every single mocha, vanilla, pumpkin and turmeric latte is alarming. A few awful ingredients found in Starbucks mocha are Mono and Diglycerides and Potassium Sorbate. What are these three things, Jen, and why are they in the drinks?
Mono & Diglycerides are emulsifiers that keep oil and water from separating. Lets take coffeemate liquid creamer, for example. If you pour it into a cup, it is a uniform liquid with no real need to shake. Whereas when using a clean creamer (almonds and water), you will notice a separation with water on top and almond pulp at bottom. This is real food acting in a natural way — the way food should be. A quick shake or froth will mix everything together. These emulsifiers are found in all of our foods - Baked goods, Bread, Butter, Candy, Chocolate, Creamers, Frozen foods, Ice cream, Margarine, and Mayonnaise and it is to blame for the increase of inflammation and rise of cancer cases. But…the weird ingredients do not stop there.
Potassium Sorbate is a chemical additive and preservative used to prevent spoilage in foods. Foods are supposed to spoil. Foods are supposed to be alive and not live on a shelf for many weeks. This is dead food. We want live food — ones that feed our good gut bacteria. Foods made with fake ingredients kill our good gut bacteria and our body does not know what to do with fake ingredients. It is foreign — it stops digesting and just bloats. This promotes inflammation and you will find this ingredient assisted with a long list of other inflammatory ingredients. You will not find a label that says potatoes and potassium sorbate. It will be potates, refined peanut oil, dextrose, carrageenan, potassium sorbate, etc…. make sense?!!
